General Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator safely and efficiently operates a variety of heavy mobile equipment, including but not limited to motor graders, dozers, excavators, backhoes, compaction equipment, scrapers, and wheel loaders. This position requires extended travel and temporary assignments to potentially remote project locations throughout Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

Essential Job Accountabilities

  • Safely operate heavy equipment to excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel, and other materials.
  • Perform various activities including but not limited to road building, fine grading, finishing, sloping, banking, backfilling, demolition, ditching, loading, excavating, stockpiling, road surface maintenance, building and maintaining road berms, loading trucks, and trenching.
  • Operate heavy equipment in accordance with the company's safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure operation of equipment is within capabilities and limitations.
  • Perform required safety inspections and complete documentation.
  • Perform laborer or other operational duties as assigned when not operating equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and safe job site.
  • Ability to travel to various project sites, including extended travel and temporary assignments to potentially remote project locations throughout Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent years of experience, preferred.
  • Completion of a recognized heavy equipment operator apprenticeship OR equivalent combination of training and experience.

Work Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience operating heavy equipment in construction environment.
  • Knowledge of earthwork, road and highway construction.
  • Extended travel and temporary assignment to remote out of town project locations may be eligible for per diem, subsistence, or other travel-related compensation in accordance with company practice and project requirements. Eligibility, rates, and duration are determined by the Company and may vary by assignment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate equipment within designated area with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work, day, swing, and night shifts (occasionally extended hours).
  • Ability to work in constant exposure to outside elements, in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in safety sensitive construction setting, including exposure to moving machinery and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment.
  • Ability to squat, crawl, and work in awkward positions/confined spaces.

Physical Demands

  • Physical dexterity, stamina, and excellent hand-eye coordination with ability to: grasp, assemble, and lift objects, stand, sit, and walk for extended periods over uneven surfaces, squat, bend, climb ladders onto equipment or other objects, and potentially lie down.
  • Lifting, pushing, pulling of heavy items weighing up to 50 lbs. or more
