We are looking for a full-time, non-benefited, seasonal summer GIS Worker to perform entry level to intermediate semi-skilled office and field work that supports the operational and maintenance functions of the County Highway Department. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the assigned supervisor and indirectly from the GIS Director. Preference will be given to college students studying GIS or a related field.
Preferred hiring salary range is $20.65 to $22.58 per hour with a full salary range of $20.65 to $26.16 per hour. Placement depends on factors such as qualifications, internal equity, market conditions, and applicable policy guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Minimum requirements are:
- High School Diploma or GED and
- Valid MN Driver's License
- Must be at least 18 years old by May 31, 2026
- Post-secondary coursework in GIS preferred
Essential Functions & Requirements Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Essential Functions Creates, edits, and updates point, line, and polygon features in geodatabases and shapefiles.
Develops static maps in digital formats (PDF, JPG, PNG) and for printing in a variety of sizes from letter size to large format.
Collects and updates geospatial and attribute data in the field using Esri mobile applications.
Edits and develops interactive maps, mobile maps, and dashboards as needed.
Scans and relates documents (e.g. construction or right of way plans) to GIS datasets.
Performs other work as assigned related to the development, operation, and maintenance of the Highway Department's GIS data, maps, and applications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of Esri ArcGIS software including ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online; knowledge of Esri apps such as Field Maps and Survey123; knowledge of Microsoft Office products; some knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures of the work; some knowledge of surveying methods; some knowledge of specialized equipment used in performance of duties assigned; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
