Assist in the preparation and performance of gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens. Follow section guidelines and utilize a voice recognition system for dictation as available. Assist in the gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens under the supervision of a pathologist. Describe gross anatomic features and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination. Prepare frozen section and permanent sections for light microscopy, including taking pictures as needed. Ensure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling of surgical pathology specimens. Obtain case history, laboratory data, and copies of scans and X-rays from clinical records when indicated. Assist in coding gross specimens during the gross description. Organize and coordinate the anatomic pathology grossing for all specimens on the grossing tables. Update and use Voice Recognition templates as needed, ensuring that backup dictation systems have the same templates. Troubleshoot Voice Recognition issues. Assist the pathologist in preparing, staining, and cover slipping samples selected for frozen section. Inventory designated gross room supplies. Demonstrate safe use of the grossing table, handsaw, and cryostat. Prepare specimens for histology as needed. Assist in preparing and performing post mortem examinations as needed. Download cassettes from the LIS and/or print additional cassettes as needed. Accurately enter required information on the LIS, including the number of blocks and pieces of tissue. Select appropriate samples for decalcification and submit adequately decalcified tissue. Assist with updating the Gross Room Manual as needed. Maintain open communication with all pathologists and laboratory staff. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
